The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich is a science and technology university with an outstanding research record. About 350 professors in 15 departments teach mainly in the engineering sciences and architecture, system-oriented sciences, mathematics and natural sciences areas and carry out research that is highly valued worldwide. Maintaining and developing its top standing in the international competition among top universities is an important task of ETH Zurich.
The Chair of Sustainable Construction at the ETH has been the first of this kind in the world. It has been funded by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction (HFSC) to put a well balanced emphasis on each of the dimension of sustainability and especially on their interlinkages: the economic, ecological, societal, cultural and institutional. The chair deals with the whole aspects in the field of the built environment. Beneath ecological and economic Life Cycle Assessments of buildings, settlements and the metabolism of cities, the socio-cultural dimension of sustainability is of specific interest for us. To achieve these objectives we run several national and international projects, combining our strong theoretical background with the need to strive for practical solutions to achieve a more sustainable built environment.
